11 + FAQs

Who sits the 11+?

The 11+ is designed to assess whether your child is suitable for a grammar or independent school.

When is it taken?

Usually in the first term of their last year at primary school, although this may vary depending on factors affecting the school.

Are the results of the 11+ the only deciding factor in offering my child a place?

Not always. Some schools consider the convenience of location and /or whether the student has a brother or sister already at the school. Bear in mind that many schools are oversubscribed and therefore they may not offer a place, even if your child achieves the pass mark.

Are all 11+ tests the same?

Although formats may vary slightly, depending on the school or  local authority,  the topics your child is tested on are :

  • Verbal reasoning

  • Writing

  • Comprehension

The timings of the tests may vary.

Who are the test providers?

Either :

GL assessment

or

University of Durham – CEM

or

The school independently.

How do I enter my child into the test?

Step 1: Find out where your child will take the test.

If you live within the local authority area, contact them directly and ask for information about admissions.

If you live outside the local authority area, the local authority will be able to tell you how to enter your child for the test.

If your child is in primary school, the test may be arranged for them, so ask the office.

If you are applying to a school which is part of a consortium there may be one test for all schools in the consortium and a separate test for schools which are not.

Step 2: Fill in an application form with your selected schools.

This must be done in the autumn of year 6.

List the grammar schools first and then list the state schools.

(Failure to do this will result in your child being randomly offered an unfilled place at a comprehensive.)

You may wish to find out whether a scholarship or bursary is available for your child.

Step 3: Ask the schools any questions you have.

  • When is the deadline and do I have to send any paperwork?

  • When and where will the test take place?

  • If past papers are available? (These usually cost.)
